| The air over London was noticeable clear on the drive into London
| tonight - the sun was still clearly bright and visible as it touched
| the horizon - something you see very rarely with the smog that usually
| envelops the capital. The silhouette of the Gherkin, Tower 42,
| Barbican and Canary Wharf looked dramatic against the yellow disk.
| It's just a shame I didn't have a camera to hand...

| Quite a difference in a short distance. Here, in the Chilterns about 50km
| NNW of central London, horizontal visibility at sunset was about
| 8-10km, there was a marked, moderately shallow haze layer with a top
| around 800-900ft amsl, and the sun was obscured by haze before it
| reached the horizon.

We had pretty good visbility here on the South Coast at sunset - I watched
Jupiter set amongst the trees. By 1900, however, it did not seem quite so
clear and I recorded "Moderate" rather than "Good".
Also noticed here after sunset was a distinct yellow glare to the SW with a
purple top edge, later fading to a red/purple band along the horizon. This
almost certainly due to aerosols from that volcano which blew in the
Aleutians a couple of months ago.
