Default Sferics and ground truth

I was out at the east coast today (Skegness) there was a few showers
but then at about 3pm there was a thunder storm. A short burst of
heavy rain (very large drops) a number of rumbles of thunder. Looking
out to see where the main storm was I saw 2 separate flashes of
lightning. Counting to the thunder they were about 20 miles off the
coast. Now the question is why does the above not show up on the
sferics. This is the second time I have questionned them, in the
resent severe weather there were some storms witth large numbers of
flashes and strikes but the sferics where showing less than 9 flashes
in a half hr period. So how well do the sferic charts compare with
ground truth.
