I think this is a low salary given the qualifications and experience needed
for the job compared with what is available in other emploment sectors. This
possibly explains why these subjects are becoming less popular at university
than other courses. You are talking about six or seven years as a student
before getting your PhD and probaly severable years after that at a derisory
rate of pay as a resaerch assistant. This is a very unattractive proposition
given the high cost of housing in the UK.

Mind you nobody joins the MetO to get rich :-)
