Default Thickness Question

I've been watching the GFS output because there's more snow forecast for
us over the next week. The output which shows thickness varying from
5400 to 5160 over about 100 Km, would this trigger any significant
weather phenomena, in the same way as close isobars indicate gales,
other than just going from balmy to bl**dy chilly in a couple of hours

Which day(s) are you referring to as I can see no sign of such a gradient?
