Truly, our world has gone off its head, and no one seems to notice - not least those
wretched MPs who allow all this to happen without having the faintest idea what is going
on.

This is an excellent example of what happens when public policy
confronts an ideologue. Mr Booker is apparently bemused at how this
could happen, and if he were honest and really were "a skeptic" and
not intellectually lazy he'd question his own assumption that these
programs are not cost-feasible or would require the shutting down of
the British economy.
But of course he isn't. He proceeds on the basis that his claims are
sound and the counter-intuitive conclusion is then forced -- the world
has taken leave of its senses and only he and a handful of initiates
can see it.
That's how most fundamentalists think of course.
