Philip - does your E-W / N-S index (IIRC) take into consideration
strength of wind?

Richard, no it doesn't ... the indices simply resolve the mean
monthly flow into its W/E and N/S components. My feeling
is that it certainly has been quite a windy July, but also that
most unsettled summer months are windy. The big difference
is that they are not as cool as they used to be. I seem to
remember reading that July 1954 was a particularly windy
month ... I'll see if I can dig out a few figures from the MWR.
