As soon as the Met Office recanted on their "barbecue summer" forecast
the weather seemed to pick up, but even July wasn't that terrible here
compared with what I remember from forty years or so ago.

I'd say that sums it up pretty well for me too (born 1942) and
living most of the time not far from where I am now. By 1954 I was
just about old enough to know what summer should be like and I
remember thinking at the time what a poor one this was. '56 and '58
weren't much better and there was no really good summer from 1960 to
1974, the last -mentioned being particularly dismal. In the last 20
years summers have been on average better than any period in my
lifetime. Some things were better in the past, but not summer
weather. People of my age (and sometimes considerably less) can get
quite huffy when you gently tell them this so it's advisable not to
make too much of it.

However, I well remember the glorious summers of 1955 and of course
1959, so my memories of childhood are of wonderful summer weather, in
both tjhose years, we went on holiday in the North West of England or
North Wales. Aaaaah those were the days... and I *only* remember
those two summers in any sort of detail, from my pre-teen childhood.
It's a funny old thing, memory!
