As the drought continues around here fires are breaking out. Not helped by
the hot but breezy weather. A large patch of grassland had been destroyed
on my walk this afternoon on some local marshland. A grass fire in Great
Wakering burnt down two houses. *I suspect the Australians would find that
odd considering what they have to put up with. A bit like the
Scandinavians with our difficulty in dealing with snow I suppose.

I just find it utterly amazing that just 250 miles to my east you are having
a drought whereas here in Devon everywhere is lush, growing vigorously and
soaking.

We have some friends that live in the next road to where the fires
were at Great Wakering, the whole thing was pretty scaring. People
were removing fence panels as the fire was using them like a lighted
fuse. Our local paper had five pages with pictures in last night.
