Not sure if it's the case elsewhere, but here (Southampton) it's
incredibly dark for the time of day (0845) - I know we're now getting

in the south of England it's rarely this dark this late even in
December.

For some odd reason - perhaps someone will enlighten me - we put the
clocks back approximately one month after the autumn equinox but put
them forward more or less around the time of the spring equinox.

This ensures that towards the end of October we get dark mornings,
with sunrise times only about 30 minutes earlier than those at the
winter solstice.

We used to put the clocks forward at the beginning of March, but then
Brussels forced us to delay the light evenings until the end of the month.

I'm sure Italy used to (in 1992) put their clocks back at the end of
September. Did the Maastricht Treaty alter this?
