For what little it's worth, those maxima (for the 12th) are generally
lower
than on the same day in 1962.

Your comments have jogged my memory, Mike, as I remember that by the
20th,21st Dec in 1962,
maxima were at or below -20c over much of northern and central Europe east
of 20degreesE longitude.
It will be interesting to see whether this figure can be achieved this time.
