Your comments have jogged my memory, Mike, as I remember that by the
20th,21st Dec in 1962,
maxima were at or below -20c over much of northern and central Europe
east
of 20degreesE longitude.
It will be interesting to see whether this figure can be achieved this
time.
Peter - this is what my diary says for the 21st.
Maxima: Moscow -20C, Warsaw -15C, Belgrade -3C, Berlin -5C, Cologne 4C,
Paris 8C, Brussels 6C, Bordeaux 8C, Madrid 7C, Nimes 6C and Venice 0C.
Coastal Norway was 2C in the S and -2C in the N. Oslo -3C,
Stockholm -4C,
Helsinki -16C, Murmansk -16C and inland areas of the N were -16 to -22C.
Iceland was 1 to -3C.
Thanks Mike; obviously my memory has failed me- spare my blushes!Although,
to be fair, only Moscow, Warsaw
and Helsinki were east of 20 degrees east.

I forgot to add:-
What were the temperatures on 23 December, Mike? By this time the freezing
weather had reached England.
