I love snow, but it seems that it doesn't return my affection. On the
pavements and roads on my housing estate in Cranleigh the snow has been
compacted into ice by people's feet and cars' wheels. In the good old days,
the council would have treated at least the roads with grit and salt by
now, but if it happens at all nowadays it takes much longer.

Which is a preamble to saying that I managed to slip and fall not just
once today but twice, which in athletics terms is an unwanted personal
best. I was lucky not to break any bones, just collecting some bruises and
a scraped patch on my arm (fortunately missing landing on the point of my
elbow by about an inch). I'm a non-driver, but in weather like this I
rather envy motorists. Yes, you can skid, but at least a car can't fall
over!
