" OMAHA, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- The early stages of a massive
holiday snow storm affecting a wide swath of the midsection of the
United States began taking shape Wednesday, forecasters said.
The storm was expected to grow into a full blizzard, likely
making travel in the Plains states challenging on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day, AccuWeather.com reported.
While bringing snow, ice and frigid temperatures to the
Plains, the same system was expected to trigger damaging
thunderstorms across the U.S. South and an ice storm in the
Northeast, forecasters said. "

XI'AN, China, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Sub-zero temperatures and
heavy snow in northwestern China have caused traffic jams, flight
delays and power and heating outages, authorities say.
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region experienced
temperatures of minus 40 degrees and winds of up to 60 mph, China's
state run Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.
"This is by far the worst cold snap of this winter," a
regional weather bureau spokesman said. "It was a result of chilling
factors from western Siberia."
