Default Rain in S Wales

A Maplin Fine Offset WH1081 weather station as a Christmas present now
gives me interesting data - though the wind vane is not much use, and I'm
still working on the best position for the temperature sensor.

Do you mean the weather vane is not much use because it spins around wildly?
If so, try to get hold of a small plastic bottle (30 - 60ml works for me);
cut the bottom off; make two cuts upwards from the bottom; then slide the
"fin" of the vane into the bottle, so you've got the neck of the bottle
pointing away from the vane. If seems to have stabilised mine somewhat.

But if you have a look at the Cumulus forums (fora??) you'll find lots of
other tips such as attaching duct tape to the fin, as well as solutions for
protecting the temperature sensor from heat from the sun, and lots of other
modifications.

Incidentally the snow in Carmarthen has just stopped having dumped a couple
of centimetres on us this morning, and the temperature has risen above
freezing for the first time since Sunday
