20 days on the trot with complete snow cover in Wishaw. Quite an
achievement!
This might have happened in December 1981 here, locally there's a record
showing 24 days of snow lying in December 1981, but at a site over 150ft
higher than here. Beyond that, the winter of 1962/63 would be the next
candidate. February / March 1947 for sure.
With nearly a foot of snow on the ground, and models suggesting the cold
continues well into next week, 30 consecutive days is very possible.
Today also marked the 27th consecutive day with an air-frost. Trouncing the
29 day local record from Feb/Mar 1986 is all but a foregone conclusion.
Beyond that, Feb/Mar 1947 may have had a longer run, but without the numbers
I have no idea.
Without a rise or change in the wind I'd fancy another sub -10บC minimum
tonight here and much lower tomorrow night. The met office forecast -4บC
with a rise and change in the wind. Given that they are correct, I'd also
forecast heavy snow showers from the North Easterly feed - which they do
not. The snow showers are starting to knock on Edinburgh's door as the wind
swings slightly mind you, so it'll be a close call.
And right on cue a gentle breeze from the NE has awoken here... 1 foot, here
we come.
Alex.
