Turned to sleet on the back end of the shower.
Now there's some interesting cloud physics which will explain it as
Martin mentioned in a previous post.
Different temperature and humidity regimes in cloud and sub cloud no
doubt.
Also updraught and downdraughts.
Fascinating!
