BBC Countrytracks forecast stated that Dec/Jan was the coldest in
Scotland "on record"! Remains to be seen.
It's not the case for the whole of Scotland, though perhaps it has been
with most?
December/January 1981/82 was slightly colder in this area (0.4ºC cooler).
And it looks to have been fractionally cooler for Glasgow and Edinburgh
too as far as I can tell. So I'm not sure if that's just a bit of headline
grabbing from the BBC / met office.
December/January 1939/40 is another candidate for being cooler.
Calling Mr Eden.

Well, whoever said that was talking through their fundament and
probably deserves a good spanking thereupon. Here are the stats
for Dec/Jan combined:
Station * * * * 09/10 * *96/97 * *95/96 * *81/82 * *78/79
Lerwick * * * * 3.3 * * * *3.9 * * * *3.7 * * * *1.9 * * * *2.2

So every station was colder in 81-82, some by more than
a degree (quite a large margin when you're looking at
two-month averages), and 8 of the 12 were colder in
78-79 as well.
And of course we should also emphasise that there are
lots and lots and lots of Jan/Feb combinations colder than
the coldest Dec/Jan combination.
Philip
Just had a sneaking feeling that might be the case. Thanks Philip.
