BBC Countrytracks forecast stated that Dec/Jan was the coldest in
Scotland "on record"! Remains to be seen.
So every station was colder in 81-82, some by more than
a degree (quite a large margin when you're looking at
two-month averages), and 8 of the 12 were colder in
78-79 as well.
And of course we should also emphasise that there are
lots and lots and lots of Jan/Feb combinations colder than
the coldest Dec/Jan combination.
I had found myself feeling a bit glum at the prospect of the end of
winter, but Nick Miller cheered me up at the end of the Countryfile
forecast with the week ahead with his suspicion that the mild weather
wasn't here to stay for long.
However, if they can't get a simple thing like the coldest
December-January in Scotland right, how can they be expected to get the
weather forecast right?
He also said that the temperatures in Scotland went back "as far as
1914" - which of course we know to be no time at all. Is this really
right?
