This piece of American folklore is much akin to our own British folklore
concerning Candlemas, which also falls on February 2nd. There was a good
piece on the subject by Philip Eden in the most recent Sunday
Telegraph's weather section, to which I was hoping to provide a link,
but it doesn't seem to be available online. So I will have to make do by
linking to his contribution to our discussion about this topic in this
