Rockfall/avalanche fences. If you see them close up they're massive.

Pfew, thanks. For a moment I thought the Inca's migrated and build their
cornterraces on your slopes..;-)

The medium-term objective is to get trees or scrub to grow on the steep
slopes wherever possible, because they look better and need less
maintenance. Until the reafforestation programme can show results,
fences protect the young trees and also the village underneath.
