What you were taught in school was a generalisation. Much of the time
this winter the weather clearly did NOT have an Atlantic origin.

Generalisation, yes, I agree. But without the Atlantic influence I reckon
the temperature would have been at least 30 degrees lower that it generally
was. And that would generally be considered cold.
