The UK and continental Europe could be gripped by more frequent cold
winters in the future as a result of low solar activity, say
researchers.

They identified a link between fewer sunspots and atmospheric
conditions that "block" warm, westerly winds reaching Europe during
winter months.

But they added that the phenomenon only affected a limited region and
would not alter the overall global warming trend.

The findings appear in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

Lots more about it athttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8615789.stm

I bet there'll be some comments about me posting it twice - dunno how
that happened ?!

Anyway, there's lots more stories about this athttp://news.google.co.uk/news/story?pz=1&cf=all&ned=uk&hl=en&topic=t&...

Including a link to the Nature report...

Article in New Scietist this week too:

I'm not sure at all about the giant kink in the jetstream that is
illustrated in the article, over the UK.That didn't happen this
winter: the jetstream went south and stayed there from early Dec to
about now, with some movement, granted, but no protracted kink in its
path.
