Default Ash cloud and sunset

The sun has just set behind a bank of stratus on the horizon.
Above is
a strange striated luminesence in yellowy red. Most than
likely ash at
a concentration above 2 mg of particles per cu metre, the
critical
upper tolerance apparently for aircraft. Not long I expect
before more
airspace is closed.
