It was only a matter of time anyway. England did themselves no favours
by finishing runners up in the group stages and leaving themselves with
arguably the hardest lineup possible in the knockout stages. If they had
beat Germany they would then have Argentina, and then, most likely,
Brazil. I think repeatedly playing teams of that calibre would just sap
the strength of the England side, even if they were on best form. If
they had come top in their group they would have had a much easier
lineup and it wouldn't have started to get really tricky until the semi's.
