I was thinking along those lines and hesitated before I wrote it - just
what is "average" at this time of year ?

You could argue that, if the warmest places only reach the average 17-18°C,
then other places will have been below that, and so "quite cool" !

Also perhaps a bit of wishful thinking - I haven't yet quite got used to
the idea that we are well into autumn.
