Probably because they've never been in a whiteout situation before.
The same reporter however may well find themselves in actual whiteout
conditions later when the wind picks up - and, more's the pity (not),
they get stranded for a day or two.


An actual whiteout does not require wind nor falling snow. Visibility is not
a factor either. It just needs low cloud and total snow cover so that light
reflection makes earth and sky look the same.


And here was me thinking it was another name for Tippex :-)
