When is the earliest time that the Midlands could see snowfall?

The best known example of September snow happened around the 20th in 1919,
following a spell of exceptional warmth mid-month. According to a book I
have
handy: "... by the morning of the 20th snow covered the ground at low levels
in
Scotland and northern England, with a substantial covering over higher
ground
throughout Wales and also over Exmoor and Dartmoor. Sleet showers were
observed at lower levels as far south as the Thames Valley."

Snow was also seen lying on the slopes of the Black Mountains (SE Wales)
down to an altitude of 1300 feet. The Clee Hills in south Shropshire also
had a covering, and an observer in Herefordshire noted a sprinkling on
the ground at daybreak at 300 ft above sea-level. The higher slopes of
Snowdon were snow-covered for a week.
