Well I'm quite sure it doesn't /have/ to be a plank. A rope and large
and heavy iron pole would do. Or a rope and a lawn roller would likely
provide good results of course.

However, although I am willing to entertain the use of a heavily
magnetized and rapidly rotating spacecraft to help make a crop circle, I
am not quite sure how one would attach a rope to it.
