The rainfall figures so far this year say it all:-

January 90.8mm (-82.2mm LTA)
February 119.7mm (-13.3 LTA)
March 30.0mm (-75.0 LTA)
April 17.8mm (-59.2 LTA)
May (so far) 15.2mm (-52.8 LTA)

Cracks 2cm in width are opening up across the lawn, but one advantage
of heavy clay soil is that the growth still stays wonderfully green
for most of the time.

Hi Richard, my soil is a stony loam and holds water pretty well too. Never
yet had a brown lawn up here, although 2003 was close. I fancy we will this
year though, it is only the cloud that is slowing the evaporation.
Here are my rainfall figures:
January 179.9 mm (98% ELTA)
February 155.6 mm (110%)
March 30.9 mm (23%)
April 16.0 mm (17%)
