At last we have had some measurable rain here at 8 o'clock this evening.
Unfortunately I can't give an accurate figure because the rain gauge was
all
gunged up, and was recording 0.6mm each time it incremented instead of the
correct 0.3mm. (Oh boy, but that sounds bad. Is television so boring that
it's more exciting watching the AWS these days?) That has now been cured.
Weather station shows 8.7mm, which is most definitely wrong, since 3.3mm
of
that was me tinkering with it. I guess it should be about 3mm, which all
fell in about 10 minutes.

Pitsford shows 14.62mm for the day, somewhat different, but that I can
believe. When I was out with the dog this evening, I could see it
absolutely
****ing down about 3 miles to the north (Pitsford area) and another deluge
about 5 miles to the west (Sean's neck of the woods). We managed to miss
it
all. Water butt's now full up. Hurray!

Hi Jim just 1.6mm here in the evening, giving 2 mm for the day. I
could see the heavy showers passing just to the North West of me which
would account the large Pitsford total.
I have recorded just 6.4 mm for July so far. Annual total is at
186.9mm. It is very frustrating to see the showers passing all
around.
The rainfall total for June was 35.2mm, in contrast to many areas
nearby which saw above average rainfall.
A quick glance at the radar this morning sees the next band weakening
as it approaches the Northampton area.

=======================

I did a study a while back looking into the climatology of airmass showers
over the UK using radar data at 5km resolution and neural network processed
satellite data. It's been published in a back issue of Weather magazine (Vol
60 No 6 2005). Northamptonshire was the least showery area IIRC of the whole
of Great Britain and Northern Ireland!
