Just had a couple of large cracks of thunder and lightening in SE
Sheffield. Most unexpected?

Several in Lincoln too recently.

Convective alerts have been issued by both TORRO and Netweather,
although they concentrate on the more southern parts of the UK and
Sheffield is at the limit of or to the north of the "risk" zone.

Cause is given as a slow-moving pool of cold air in the upper
atmosphere, producing steep lapse rates and instability as the lower
atmosphere is still being warmed by the SW winds running over high sea
surface temperatures.

Saw one magnificent flash of lightning between 16:40 and 16:45, just
after I got off the train at Ashurst (New Forest), followed about 15-20
seconds later by a roll of thunder clearly audible over the roar of
traffic passing me as I walked alongside the A35.

To either side of me along the south coast, funnel clouds have been
reported at Plymouth and Hastings. Links to photos of these (and a
video of the Hastings one, which looked like it may have briefly become
a "rope" tornado) can be found from Netweather's "Twitter" feed.
