Looking back through my records and George Booth's at Epping, Essex,
the winter of 1995 / 96 wasn't particularly remarkable.
Three cold spells in mid November, post Christmas / New Year and end
of January / early February. George recorded 16 ice days
though there wasn't much significant snowfall.
Hi, Scott,
16 ice days (max below 0C) in Epping. Surely that is a cold winter? it
was certainly cold and snowy here.
In fact only 4 'Ice Days' days in Epping (with max 0°C) in Winter
1995/1996. Thin snow cover at 0900 on 10 mornings in December '95and 3 in
January '96. December '95 cold (2.7degC below normal) but January '96
normal. Have to go all the way back to the 1980's for winters with a
significant number of Ice Days. 1986/87 (9), 1984/85 (15) and 1981/82 (12).
Most recent Ice Day here was 30/12/2000.
All the best
