I am not one of those (outspoken warmer) and probably not one of those
either (affluent middle class). I am retired and have been so since I was
51.

I have one car with a 1600 engine. I am considering trading down to a
shiny new vehicle with a one litre engine. Its emissions are low enough
that I would not have to buy a tax disc, my insurance would fall
significantly and my petrol consumption would be halved.

Would I do this to help save the planet or merely to reduce my expenses
by a few hundred pounds per year? Does it matter so long as I do it?

The house has gas fuelled central heating and is double glazed and
insulated insofar as the latter is possible in an old stone cottage. I
keep the house at a sensible temperature during the day (21 downstairs,
18 upstairs) except in summer when the heating is off. The heating is off
at night all year round. Hot water is on demand, not in a tank.

I switch electrical equipment off when not in use, rather than leave
things on standby (even my hi-fi and that is better left on), however my
router, network switch, and server are permanently on.
I use low wattage fluorescent lighting throughout the house and by choice
- there are still plenty of power hungry alternatives.

No windmills or solar panels as the benefits are minimal in my situation.

Personally I only drive to work, I've never been one for flash loud
cars , I only want to get from A-B as efficiently and as economically
as possible. My car is a humble suzuki ignis 1300 petrol. I've had it
from new and as my lileage is so low it's really not worth part
exchanging it. It's just over five years old and I have 18000 miles on
the clock. Of course I appreciate that people living in rurul
situations need to drive and need a good car,

I live in an old detached Victorian six befroom house in Sydenham and
I heat that very sparingly. I still live there as my house is major
part of my pension when I officially retire.

I have investigated solar voltaic but would only seriously consider
them if I could mount them as low a one storey as they are a pain to
arttend to on a roof
