RMK: This would have been a notable day's weather in January, never
mind April! Moderate snow continued till about 1330z, making it around
18 hours of continuous snow, mostly moderate but heavy at times
this morning. With a fresh to strong NNE wind blowing for much of
the day it was pretty grim. Since 1330z there's been slight sleet and
snow and a steady thaw has set in. Max temp was 2.1. We had a
snow plough along our lane at about 1400z so we were able to
get out for a bit of a walk after that. There's been a lot of drifting
and
any lanes that haven't had the attention of the snow plough are blocked
by deep drifts. My best estimate of the level depth is about 13cm. It has
reduced quite a bit, partly by compaction and partly by melting.
As is usual in a NE snow situation, little of note here. Some light snow
swirling around earlier this morning but never showed any sign of
settling. I can see the snow on the western slopes of the Pennines but
even on Winter Hill, there only appeared to be a dusting at the top.
It was the wind that was notable today. Strong winds from the
NE are unusual here and it was strange too see the trees being
blown 'the wrong way'. And what a horrible, unpleasant wind it
was too.
Max temp 5.2C. It might as well have been January.
