I'd hardly call three days with clear blue skies and a minimum night temp
of -3.2 a cold Northerly spell. The only way there is going to be a real
cold wave which lasts a week or more is for the formation of an intense
Russian high which ridges across Scandinavia and then towards us thereby
pulling in very cold Easterly winds. Most of the famous winters have had an
intense high involved at some stage. The current set-up rules out the
possibility of a lasting cold spell. There may be the odd Northerly
intrusion, but that's all. There doesn't look like being any significant
changes in the pattern until after the middle of January.

Most of the time doesn't work like that with 'usual situations' \ major,
permanent features like the High pressure to the South.
Considering it's our usual setup anyway, and the fact the GFS is
constantly
going for it, and the fact we've just ahd a Northerly cool spell...... you
can bank on it
.
Like I said, seen it all before.

Given that everyone here keeps going on about how silly it is to try and
predict weather 5 days in advance (or even 2-3 days in advance!) I find
it
pretty highly amusing that people are going to write off the rest of
winter,
ie 2 months of weather!
