That's some diurnal range, Bernard, and larger than anything I have
recorded in September (30 yrs). The max here was the same but the min was
8.0°C at 00Z. The temperature then rose to 14°C by 03Z, with a S'ly breeze
picking up, followed by a slow fall. Gatwick remained at 8°C with shallow
fog. This sort of thing has happened many times before.

Yes Tudor, that was indeed a record. I keep stats for diurnal range, but use
min to max criterion. On that score, the 8th was 4.9 to 25.9, 21.0 deg. The
previous highest for September (back to 1976) was 20.8 in 2003 (17th). The
mean daily range for Sept is 9.4 and the mean monthly highest for Sept is
16.6.
