Rmks: SIG difference between rainfall recorded by AWS (25.8 mm) and 5"
gauge (31.6 mm) overnight, much of the difference probably occurred
during the spell of very heavy rain just after midnight.

Same here Andy:

Davis AWS TBR = 51.8 mm
5" standard rain gauge = 64.2 mm.

Normally the two agree quite well but this rain event has made a mess of
that. Checked TBR and found nothing wrong.

Both TBR and gauge are in the same location (though about 1 metre apart)
and the top rim about 30 cm above the grass for both.
