It's all about money nowadays in the MetO :-(

Anyone would think that the Met Office never used to charge for
information. Forty-odd years ago, my hourly - and minimum - charge for a
face-to-face briefing was £40; minimum charge for raising a bill for
other enquiries was £5. At the time, I wished the money went to the Met
Office instead of completely bypassing it.

Commercial dealings by the Office were, at that time, a bit of a
shambles. A large oil company was quoted a million pounds for a
contract by one section of the Office so they went to another branch
and got it for half-a-million.
