Warm summer nights

While tidying up my stats for August, I came across this rather unsettling
statistic:
In 104 years of (homogenised) records in this vicinity, the six warmest
Augusts
in respect of mean minimum temperature were 1997 (which broke the previous
record by almost 2 degC), 1990, 2002, 2001, 2003 and 1995. This marked
warming of summer nights is also apparent, though less strongly so, in the
July figures.
I've noticed from my recent research into pre-1900 Cheltenham data that
summer nights were rather cooler - around 51F (10.5C), compared to 53.5F
(12.0C) now. Also, very high day temperatures seemed rarer too.
