[WR]181545ZJAN2013_WestMoors/EastDorset
... 18/1400Z: snow has been continuous past hour (as it has been since
~0330Z this morning), but has now eased considerably - very slight past
10/15 minutes - still gloomy OVC; visibility now ~1500M. OAT: 0.6°C.
.... 18/1545Z: the 'proper' snow eased back to rain/snow mixed plus snow
pellets by 1415Z, and there is very little PPN coming out of a grey sky
(though with markedly lifted base and visibility now at least 4 km).
Finally managed to apportion-out a rainfall ex five-inch gauge which
gives period 17/0900 to 18/0900Z = 11.9 mm: and up to my messing about
around 1400Z, another 7.1 mm ... total for the 'event' then 19.0 mm, but
as you can see from my depth reports [means 09Z to 15Z varying between 5
and 8 cm], nothing like a 10:1 ratio was produced in snow depth ...
though I fancy if the starting temperature had been lower (it was around
3degC) and the ground a lot colder (as per East Anglia for example),
then we would have had a much higher yield.
All-in-all though, a 'useful' event and certainly better than last winter!
Martin.
