March 2013 might be the coldest March since 1963, or is it 1962?

I'd be grateful if you knowledgeable weather-students could clarify
which year it was as there seems to be some confusion in the media.
The winter of 1962-63 has of course passed into folklore, so
presumably it's 1963 and those outlets stating 1962 are using a lazy
shorthand for 62-63
No. As I said earlier, March 1963 was not cold (CET 6.0C) whereas March
1962 was the 16th coldest in the CET record (starts in 1663) with a
temperature of only 2.8C.
Some averages for March for comparison:
1921-50: 5.92C
1951-80: 5.58C
1981-2010: 6.58C
Many thanks all, March 1962 it is then. I don't remember it, being just
6 at the time but do the following infamous winter which started with
heavy snow on Boxing Day 1962, if memory serves
