Oddly enough it's one of the comedies I genuinely couldn't stand despite
most people loving it. Repeating 'smeg' losing its appeal after the 2nd
time around...

The word 'Smeg' was never inteded to be some kind of a running-joke,
or of the main threads of the show. It was jusr a mildly amusing
alternative swear word that could be used where our current ones couldn't.
