Like Graham, I do not know of anyone who was expecting a record melt this
year.
It took five years for the 2007 record melt to be broken, so it was always
unlikely that last year's record melt would be broken this year. Lawrence
has
already pointed out that the temperatures north of 80N have been unususally
low this summer, as is seen in this chart:

But despite Arctic air temperatures dropping below 0C, the sea ice is still
retreating, and it will most likely continue to do so until the first week
in September.
