The severe weather has caused schools and roads to be closed, flights cancelled and ships unable
to sail. A Russian girl is missing, presumed swept out to sea, after ignoring warnings against
swimming.

Of meteorological interest is the amount of rain that has fallen in the normally arid south of
the island. Over the last two days, 133mm has been recorded at Tenerife Sur airport, more than
their average for an entire year (116mm).

The cause of all this was a very active cold front from the Atlantic coming up against a very
warm and humid air mass over the Canary Islands.
