According to an article in Weather (Feb 1987, A new north Atlantic low
pressure record: S.D.Burt), the lowest global sea level pressure to that
time was 870 mbar recorded by a dropsonde in the eye of typhoon Tip on 12
October 1979.
I remember reading an anecdote about a man who bought a barometer on the
date of the hurricane that hit Galveston in the 1930's. It was reading
so low he thought the thing was damaged and took it back to the shop.
When he got home his house had blown away.
What had it been reading? Anyone know?
