Yep. I suppose the next step would be to discover what triggers a SSW

(which I assume is currently unknown).

What I want to know is how they figured in previous memorable cold spells say 62/63, 78/79 & 81/82 and so on

Also as you say John what causes them and are they linked to the earths temperature?
