you had more than an inch of rain (and that's 2 inch if you live on
Dartmoor)?

Obviously the longer the record you have the better, and in that
regard I've just contacted the Met Office to see if they can help me
with some daily totals for a few sites to see what they show.

I have been keeping records since October 2001 with only the only data
loss ocurring in January and February 2013. In my locality it is
extremly unusual to get an inch of rain in a day and I am sure that
there results would not be statistically significant.

You might wish to revise the value down for those parts of the country
where annual rainfall is lower than the case in Devon. I had no days in
2013 where the total rainfall exceeded 1".
