David, welcome to the world of the weather, its always worked like that, and thankfully will always continue to work like that, as long as the sun is there to keep it going.
It doesn't normally fire them right at the UK though, if it did then the
rainfall amounts and storminess we've seen this winter would be classed
as normal. That last bit about "firing them at the UK" is important.
