I reckon it was south of Hayling Island, about 19:00. My first ever
sighting of one, so I'm suitably thrilled :-)
When I was a kid and used to go to the cinema to see a western, I'd
always check the credits - this was in the days when they came at the
start of the film - to look out for "special effects". When I saw that,
I was pretty sure there was going to be a tornado somewhere in the
film. Imagine my surprise when, one Sunday in July in the mid-1950s in
Rushden, I saw a tornado in the distance just like the ones I'd seen in
the movies. At the time, I didn't know they occurred in this country.
The best display of funnel clouds that I saw apart from that one was at
RAE Bedford in August, probably 1964, when there were five visible at
the same time.
