Middle class liberals, or indeed anybody else with even so much
as a basic education, would not write:
"The Labour party when they was in government ruined the NHS"
'The Labour party when they *were* in government ruined the NHS'
or
"The Labour party when *it* was in government ruined the NHS'
But not "it was"
